To answer your question, no it’s not common for reviews to get deleted. It is however, very common for Yelp to filter a review. Here are two reasons for why reviews no longer appear on a business page:
1. They’re Filtered
Filtered reviews are moved to the “Not Recommended” section of a company Yelp Page. There are no official rules for why this happens. Factors that may lead to reviews being filtered are: the # of friends the reviewer has, the # of photos the reviewer has, the # of compliments the reviewer has, the # of stars on the review, the text of the review, and how frequently the reviewer reviews pages on Yelp.
Let’s say you created an account 3 years ago, wrote a review, and then never log in again. If so, the review will likely get filtered with time. This is the most common reason why old reviews disappear on Yelp.
2. MECHANISM 2 – DELETED
There are two scenarios when a review can be deleted from Yelp. The first is when the reviewer deletes it him/herself. The second is when you flag the review for a violation of Yelp’s content policy and Yelp’s team agrees that the review is inappropriate. Both scenarios are rare.
Love it or hate it, Yelp and all of its reviews will be around for quite some time. As a business, for every positive review you can be happy about, you’ll fret 10 times as much for each negative post. Negative reviews affect a business’s overall Yelp “star” rating and this is the first thing users see next to your Yelp listing.
If you have received a negative review on Yelp, the best thing is to write a professional response. Keep in mind R.E.S.T. – Relax: Breathe… Be Empathetic: stand in their shoes. Be Specific: about how you will fix the problem. Be timely: respond as soon as you can.
